Phalakone & Chansouda | Laotian Luang Prabang Wedding

Traditional Laotian Luang Prabang Wedding

Chansouda and Phalakone, a wonderful French couple, grew up and met in Paris, then moved together to Montreal. They then returned to their roots for their Luang Prabang wedding in Laos.
Their wedding was at the gorgeous Villa Ban Khoy, a French-Lao house between the Mekong and the Nam Dong Rivers. The wedding ceremony in this picturesque setting is one of the most memorable weddings I have ever photographed.

Water Pouring Ceremony

During sunrise, there was a golden glow over the ancient temples and quiet streets of Luang Prabang. This created a dream-like environment for wedding photography. A procession of orange-robed monks strolled through the town, collecting alms.
After making their humble offering, they joined the traditional Yam Nam water-pouring ceremony. They listened to the rhythmic sound of drums and chanting as they poured water over the sacred statues. Being part of this blessing was a true privilege and an experience I will never forget.
After the ceremony, we walked along the riverside where the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers meet. Luang Prabang provided a stunning backdrop for the couple’s photoshoot.

Baci Ceremony

Like all Laos weddings, the festivities began with the Baci ceremony. The wedding guests gathered at the enchanting Sunset Villa, awaiting the groom’s arrival. Accompanied by his groomsmen, he performed the lively Hae Keuy Human Block ceremony. This then set the stage for the captivating Baci ceremony that followed.
As night fell, the celebration continued with a Western-style Luang Prabang wedding. This was at the breathtaking Villa Bankhoy, set on the magnificent Mekong River. The couple exchanged their vows with a perfect combination of traditional Lao and Western customs.
